GENERAL EDUCATION COUNCIL.


LEGAL AUTHORITY

Reorganization Plan No. 1 of July 26, 2010 known as the Puerto Rico Education Council Reorganization Plan, repeals Act No. 148 of July 15,1999, as amended, known as the Puerto Rico General Education Council Law and consolidates the Puerto Rico Council on Higher Education and the Puerto Rico General Education Council into the General Education Council.

MISSION

Grant licenses and certificates of accreditation to those educational institutions in Puerto Rico that function effectively and efficiently, guaranteeing parents that the educational services offered to students from pre-school through the non-college post-secondary levels are of quality and are relevant in a way they can promote the development of our country.

VISION

To ensure that educational institutions in Puerto Rico offer effective, quality services within a healthy and safe environment, that they have the right administration and the financial capacity to meet their commitments to the students.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The General Education Council is comprised of a President and six members appointed by the Governor with the consent of the Senate. Said appointments are for terms up to five years. The Council is comprised of the following organizational units:

  • Licensing and Accreditation Office
  • Planning and Evaluation Office
  • Legal Services Office
  • Information Systems Office
  • President's Office
GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION

The General Education Council is located in the Westernbank World Plaza Building, Floor 21, Suite 2100, 268 Munoz-Rivera Avenue in Hato Rey.

PROGRAM

Licensing and Certification of Public and Private Schools

Program Description

Oversees the licensing of private schools in Puerto Rico and the accreditation of the public schools belonging to the Department of Education to guarantee that they operate at satisfactory levels in coordination with the four standard areas of evaluation: economic viability, the capacity to meet their educational commitments, professional solvency of the teaching staff and satisfactory scholastic physical facilities.

FISCAL YEAR 2011-2012 ADOPTED BUDGET

In Fiscal Year 2011-2012, the General Education Council incorporated and integrated its program and operations into the Puerto Rico Education Council. Its human and fiscal resources were transferred to said Council.
